If I have a puncture do I always need a new tyre ?

In short the answer is no, but this depends upon several factors 

  • Where the puncture is located
    • If the puncture is centrally located it is often possible to repair it.
    • Punctures in the side wall or close to the tyre shoulder cannot be repaired.
  • The size of the puncture 
    • We will advise upon inspection.
  • The type of tyre
    • Some tyre types are not repairable, again we will advise.

Uneven tyre wear can cause a number of differing issues affecting your running costs and potentially your safety. Not only will the balance of your car alter when cornering & braking it will also reudce your fuel efficiency costoing more to run your car. 

There are things to look for 

  • Vehicle pulling / drifting to one side 
  • Juddering through the steering wheel
  • Vehicle pulling to one side or another under braking
  • Visible wear of the tread on one side of a tyre or tyres on one side of the vehicle

The legal limit for tyres as set by the government is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyres width. If the tread depth falls below this at any point then your tyre will fail the MOT test & put you at risk of procecution.

There are tyre tread bars built into the tyre about 5mm wide and 1.6mm deep within the width of the grooves and if the tyre is level with these then you need to change immediately.

Experts say once a tyre reaches 3mm the performance is already seriously degraded, less grip when cornering & stopping distance significantly greater in damp or wet conditions.
